ASK THE GROOMER

Q. My dog has long hair, is it best to have him shaved for hot weather or will just a trim do?

A. It really depends on the breed and your preference. Some dogs have long coats but it is really better not to shave them. Others could benefit from being shaved. Undercoated dogs have the coat to help protect them from various weather conditions. Keeping a long haired dog brushed out is really important.

Q. My dog frequently has tangles and matted hair. Will getting her groomed help this problem?

A. YES! Keeping up a regular grooming schedule will help to keep mats under control before the problem gets out of hand. Consider grooming as preventative maintenance for hair!

Q. What is the most difficult type of dog to groom and why?

A.The type or breed are not really factors here. Usually the most difficult pets are those who have not started being groomed as puppies. Early grooming can start at home by getting your puppy used to regular, thorough brushing and nail trimming. Trips to the groomer for just baths and nail trims also get them used to the atmosphere. Being handled by the groomer and the sounds of clippers are good things to get a puppy used too.

Q. Should I attempt to cut my dog's hair on my own?

A. Not unless you have grooming experience and a very steady well-trained hand. Attempting to groom your own pet is unsafe for you and your best friend. You risk hurting your pet and yourself handling sharp scissors - you never know how your pet may react to you in this situation. She may suddenly move and startle you both or even try to bite you. Your pet's coat is really better off being 'managed' by a professional groomer.
